Family Worship: A Practical Guide

The idea of family worship can feel intimidating. Where do you start? How long should it last? What if your kids won’t sit still?

The good news is that family worship doesn’t need to be complicated. The goal is simple: to regularly gather your household to read God’s Word, sing His praises, and pray together. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 instructs parents to teach God’s commandments diligently, “when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Here are some practical rhythms to consider: Start with just five minutes at dinner time. Read a short passage of Scripture — the Psalms, Proverbs, or the Gospels are great places to begin. Ask one simple question: “What does this tell us about God?” Close with a brief prayer.

For families with young children, consider using a children’s Bible or catechism. The rhythm matters more than the length. A consistent five minutes will bear more fruit than an ambitious thirty-minute session that happens once and is abandoned.

The most powerful thing about family worship is not the content — it’s the consistency. Your children will remember that your family paused every day to seek God together.
